HISTORY The 25th Infantry division traces its lineage to the Hawaiian Division, which defended Hawaii since 1921. On 7 December 1941, the 25th Infantry Division received its debut of fire when Japanese forces attacked military facilities on the island of Oahu. The division without delay deployed to southern and eastern coasts of the island, ready to defend against a possible Japanese invasion. The division was made famous after relieving the Marines at Guadalcanal in 1942. Due to their superior performance during this operation the 25th Infantry Division earned its nickname: "Tropic Lightning". My family really enjoyed living on Wheeler when my father was stationed there around 1994. There are lots of creepy critters (such as centipedes and house geckos), and the wild mongoose that live on base can be scary to little kids. We lived in base housing, and it was in pretty bad shape back then - I'm not sure if they've improved it anyway since then (I would hope so though! Waikiki Beach, "the lagoons", downtown Honolulu, and Diamond Head are must see areas while you're there! | |

We just PCSed away from Hawaii and I miss it already. Take advantage of living in paradise because it really does go by quickly. We used to live in Iroquois Point/ now called The Waterfront of Puluoa. Elementary school is great, the shoppette across the street from the school was useful, and of course the beach just 5 minutes away.

Very pretty out there at Waterfront of Puluoa! We visited friends out there once. How long of drive was that to Schofield for work though, it seems kind of far out?! I hate the roaches too and I love the geckos cause they are cute and EAT the Roaches... LOL I haven't had many roaches in my house thank goodness but I shouldn't say that or they may attack! hehe

I have found a ton in the past few days! not the major huge ones... but definitely the gross little roaches. stupid. OH and when I would bathe my dog outside and the water would run in the grass i swear there would be like 20-30 of them trying to crawl up my leg or on my dog. it's so wrong.

I'm new here, first duty station, but love it. Think it's a good place for me. I'm a cold weather person so the humidity/heat combo takes getting used to. No ACs in some of the older housing, although you do get 15% BAH back for that housing.
Noticed it doesn't seem to be very dog-friendly. I don't have dogs but I just noticed that. I don't see a lot of people off base with dogs. Pet laws are very strict (quarantining, etc.)
The bugs are there, but not as bad as i thought - except the centipedes. I've only seen those a few times thankfully. No rats or roaches yet, just ants, these weird little "pineapple bugs" that like water but are harmless, and a few flies. Not really bad where I'm at.
I have heard there are areas that are not military-friendly (some close to Schofield mostly) but I've found a lot of the people very friendly. I've heard it helps to not look Caucasian, but not sure I can say for sure - I look vaguely Mediterranean but have light skin.
