Kansas City does not have a Marine Corps Base. All commands are located at the Richards-Gebaur Memorial Airport. The runways are officially closed and Kansas City is planning on turning this area into an intermodal rail hub. Military hospitals, Exchanges, Commissaries, etc. are located at nearby military installations, i.e, Fort Leavenworth, Leavenworth, KS and Whiteman AFB, Knob Noster, MO. Both bases are approximately 55 miles from the greater Kansas City area. Excellent civilian medical facilities exist throughout the area, most accept Tricare. Shopping centers are abundant and provide exceptional shopping opportunities.

The Kansas City metropolitan area is home to several USMC commands/facilities. Marine Corps Support Activity, Marine Corps Reserve Support Command, Headquarters, 9th Marine Corps District, 24th Marine Regiment, 4th MARDIV REIN FMF, Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Military Enlistment Processing Station, Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS), and the Manpower Information Systems Support Activity. The Kansas City metropolitan area encompasses counties in both Missouri and Kansas. Clay, Cass, and Jackson in Missouri. Johnson and Wyandotte in Kansas. There are numerous small cities that are incorporated into the metropolitan Kansas City area. USMC commands are located in some of these. The area is serviced by a Marine Corps Community Services Center located at the Marine Corps Support Activity.

Mission: To provide such services as may be required and agreed upon, in support of the DFAS. Provide military personnel administration for DFAS and MISSA; civilian personnel support for MISSA, MCRSC, and 9th MCD. Furnish budget and financial accounting support, family housing services, contracting and logistics support, safety support, and other specific services.

History: The USMC Central Design and Programming Activity (MCCDPA) came into existence in July 1965 as the Marine Corps Reserve Automated Data Center, and was located in the Federal Building at 1500 E. 95th Street. Their mission was to direct and execute all of the functions associated with data processing as it pertains to USMC automated pay and personnel systems. The MCCDPA became a part of the Marine Corps Finance Center on 1 August 1967 when various disbursing functions, previously performed in Washington, D.C., were incrementally relocated to Kansas City. Accurate and timely payment of Marines has been the objective of Marine Corps disbursing for over 200 years. While the MCFC was in existence, a work force composed of Marine and civilian employees coordinated and supervised the disbursement of funds in payment of all active duty, Reserve and retired members, the Fleet Marine Corps Reserve, and survivor annuitants. Along with another co-located agency, the Manpower Information System Support Activity, the MCFC served as the systems sponsor for the automated Marine Corps pay and manpower management systems.

A Department of Defense initiative to consolidate military accounting and finance functions under a single agency resulted in the disestablishment of the MCFC and all other finance centers. On 20 January 1991 the center was split into two agencies: THE MARINE CORPS SUPPORT ACTIVITY and the DEFENSE FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING SERVICE - KANSAS CITY CENTER. Agencies co-located with the MCFC remain as part of the Marine Corps Support Activity. Together, the two activities continue to provide quality individualized pay service to Marines.
