The Marine Corps Recruit Depot Eastern Recruiting Region is located in the southeastern corner of South Carolina's Lowcountry within Beaufort County and sits only 20 feet above sea level. Its 7,132 acres (of which 3,262 are habitable) are picturesque and only 70 miles south of Charleston, South Carolina and 45 miles north of Savannah, Georgia.
The mission of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, is two-fold. First, it trains male recruits who have enlisted from the Eastern Recruiting Region, an area east of the Mississippi, and it trains all female recruits from across the nation. Secondly, Parris Island is the headquarters for the Eastern Recruiting Region overseeing the Corps' recruiting efforts at three district headquarters and 23 recruiting stations. The three recruiting districts are: 1st MCD, located at Garden City, NY; 4th MCD, located at New Cumberland, PA; and 6th MCD, located at Parris Island, SC.
