History: In August 1942 the War Department purchased 876 acres from local ranchers and established Two Rock Ranch Station as a training area and listening post for the U.S. Army. Houses, farm buildings, and a flock of 400 sheep were left in place to camoflage the installation should Japanese bombers get through coastal defenses. On July 1, 1971 Congress passed a bill transferring "land, buildings, all usable equipment and civilian employees" to the U.S. Coast Guard and the Training Center was established. Initially three courses were offered and less than 800 students were trained per year. The Training Center now operates 10 schools offering 32 courses.
